2010 swim lesson schedule: Session I: Session II:Session III: Session IV:

Listed below is an in depth description of what each class has to offer. Infant & Toddleres: 6 mo.-3 yrs. GOAL: Water adjustment, enjoyment and safety skills with parents in pool. Instructors will introduce bubble blowing, underwater eye opening, baby gliding, flutter kick, arm movements on the front and back and other age appropriate skill. PARENTAL participation required. Preschool: 3-5 yrs. GOAL: Water adjustment, water entries, front and back float, stroking as skills progress. Skills introduced during the pre-school classes will parallel skills introduced during Levels I–IV. Please refer to the skills in these Levels to assist you in placing your child in the appropriate class. Level I: INTRODUCTION to Water Skills GOAL: To provide students to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Student will learn water adjustment, moving through the water, bubble blowing, supported float on face and back, a flutter kick on front and back while being supported, introduction to alternating arm movement, entering and exiting the water independently and personal safety rules. Level II: FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC Skills GOAL: To provide students success with fundamental skills. Students will learn underwater breath holding, prone float, supine float, leveling off, introduction to deep water, moving flutter kick on the front and back, back crawl arm action, combined front stroke (5 yards), combined stroke on the back (5 yards) turning over and personal safety and rescue skills. Level III: Stroke DEVELOPMENT GOAL: To provide additional guided practice for level II skills. Students will learn to retrieve objects from the bottom with eyes open, jump into deep water, forward dive in the kneeling position, prone glide, supine glide, coordinate arm stroke with side breathing (10 yards), coordinate back crawl (10 yards), elementary back stroke, reverse directions while swimming, treading water and personal safety and rescue skills. Level IV: Stroke IMPROVEMENT GOAL: To develop confidence in strokes learned thus far and improve other aquatic skills. Students will learn rotary breathing, deep water bobbing, standing dive, elementary backstroke, front and back crawl (25 yards), breaststroke kick, scissor kick, basic turns, rescue breathing, and treading water with modified kicks. Level V: Stroke Refinement GOAL: Coordination & refinement of keystrokes. Students will learn alternate breathing, stride jump, forward dive from the board, long shallow dive, breast stroke (10 yards), side stroke (10 yards), elementary back stroke (25 yards), dolphin kick (10 yards), front crawl (50 yards), back crawl (50 yards), open turns on front and back, spinal injury recognition, safe diving rules, and feet first surface dives. Level VI: Skill Proficiency GOAL: To polish strokes in order to swim them with efficiency, power and smoothness for greater distance. Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with "menu" options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advance courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. Lifeguard Training (15 years or older) The course content and activities prepares lifeguard candidates to recognize emergencies, respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent such emergencies from occurring. Participants must be 15 years old on or before the start date of the course. Must also complete pre-course session o f 500 yard swim with 100 yards of crawl, breaststroke and sidestroke. Retrieve 10-pound object from 7 feet of water, and tread water for 2 minutes using legs only. Water Safety Instructor Must be 16 at the time of class and possess a current lifeguard certificate. The course content and activities prepare the WSI candidates to teach students how to swim, improve strokes, and safety around a water environment. Learn to swim well enough to survive an emergency
